Have You Heard The Damnwells Yet?

Song: "Louisville"
Artist: The Damnwells
Album: Air Stereo

If you haven't heard The Damnwells yet, do yourself a favor and go download a bunch of songs from their latest, Air Stereo. I'm not sure how these guys are not huge. They are simply a great rock band that writes even greater songs that pack an emotional wallop like few bands of today can. It's middle of America withough being Springsteen or Mellencamp and withtout the twang of Steve Earle. These guys are more like the 2007 version of Better Than Ezra--good, melodic, hooky pop/rock with no agenda, pretentiousness or fluff. And this song is so powerful without even trying to be.

Tony

Song: "Tony"
Artist: Patty Griffin
Album: Flaming Red

Patty Griffin's Flaming Red is one of my favorite albums of all time. I saw her live for the first time on this particular tour and while she's brilliant as a singer with an acoustic guitar, producer Jay Joyce worked his magic on this album and took Patty's music to new heights. Personally, I don't think she's topped this album, it was that good. "Tony" is a sad song about a kid in grade school who was relentlessly picked on, enough to commit suicide. I don't know if it's a true story or not, but the song is powerful both lyrically and musically.

Flat Tire

Song: "Flat Tire"
Artist: Athenaeum
Album: Radiance

I remember when my band was playing a show at the old Peabody's in Cleveland about ten years ago. We wound up having to play the show on the back patio instead of in the club, because Athenaeum was coming to town and the club bumped us from the main stage. I also remember pulling up to the club and seeing a line wrapped around the street for folks to buy tickets to see them. I didn't know who they were then, but about a month later I saw them open for the Goo Goo Dolls and was blown away. Athenaeum was touring in support of their new album, Radiance, and nearly every song on the album was a perfectly crafted rock tune. More importantly, I still listen to this album all the time.

Let's Get It Started

Song: Let's Get It Started
Artist: Black Eyed Peas
Album: Elephunk

Since we need to kick this party off in high gear, I'm going to start with this rather played-out track that the NBA has used for its playoffs and that you should use for pretty much any party mix you make from now until the end of time. This song will get you in the mood to shake your ass, whether or not you know how to, and basically will put you in a good mood whether you want to be in one or not.
